Recreational Programs

Starbursts (4-5 Years), Sparkles (5-8 Years) & Boys Discovery (5-8 Years)

Description

Starbursts, Sparkles and Boys Discovery classes are foundation levels gymnastics based physical education programs for the 4 -8 year age group. They provides a systematic and progressive introduction to the basics of gymnastics in a fun, friendly environment. The programs include activities of swinging, jumping, hopping, balancing, hanging, stretching, landing, rolling, bouncing, climbing and movement to music.

Pre-requisite

Ability to understand and follow simple instructions from the coach. Ability to interact in a safe and appropriate way with other children in the class.

Outcomes

The programs help develop strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and posture. The children will also learn to follow instructions in a group, interact socially and make great new friends in the gym. The programs will prepare each child to participate in the Australian Level Program system. Your child will learn to use the balance beam, trampoline, rings, uneven bars, climbing rope, crash mats, spring boards and will be introduced to other equipment as their term progresses. In this stage of development, we place a large focus on having fun whilst learning and improving basic gymnastic ability.

The children progress through a system of stages. The stages range from Stage 1 to Stage 8 and the children get tested throughout the term. If they successfully complete the stage they will then progress to the next stage and will receive their certificate of completion. On the last week of term all the children get to participate in a fun week where the coaches set up exciting and fun games and activities on the equipment for the children to enjoy.

Supernovas (7-10 Years) & Starlets (Level 3)

Girls recreation levels will focus on routine based skills from the Australian Levels Program, with girls given the opportunity to compete in club based competition. These programs will continue with an emphasis on strength and flexibility, but will work on perfecting skills, ready for girls to enter routine based competitions. Girls will continue with work on acrobatic elements and aerial awareness on trampolines. From this program, girls may be selected into our competition teams.

Opportunities will be provided for gymnasts to compete in the Hobart PCYC Eclipse In-House competition, where gymnasts can compete in a safe and familiar environment while achieving their Levels Test at the same time.

Graduation Process

Graduating from level to level is based on the gymnast’s ability both in gymnastics skills and behavior and interaction skills. The average gymnast will do 3-8 terms in each level, in order to learn all the required skills and move to the next level.

Please note that higher levels require harder skills and their passing standards are higher.

It is very important that the gymnasts are in the level that is appropriate for them in order for them to progress at the right pace. Pushing gymnasts to a higher level will not be beneficial to the gymnast and can slow the gymnast’s development and even make them quit.

Please remember that the coaches have the gymnast’s best interest in mind.
